WHY WE LOVE MICHAEL J FOX

Michael J Fox is undeniably a legend. But a “modest, down-to-earth, ordinary guy, who just happened to be the biggest star of the 1980s” kind of legend. Perfect comic timing, a frenetic physicality, wit and warmth - these are the hallmarks of his performances across a broad range of genres, and why we love him so.

Born 1961 in Canada, a self-described "army brat," Fox had a nomadic childhood. He joined the Drama Club in junior high school and immediately showed natural talent as an actor. A role in a local TV sitcom followed and at age 17, Fox left school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career. After several very lean years and only when the considerably more famous Matthew Broderick passed on the role, Michael landed the part which made him famous - Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties. The series skyrocketed to one of television’s top comedies. Movie followed, including Teen Wolf and Back to the Future — the number one movie of 1985) and Fox was a worldwide star. While filming Doc Hollywood in 1991, he developed a tremor in his pinky finger. A consultation with a neurologist revealed a surprising and devastating diagnosis: he had young-onset Parkinson’s disease (PD). He was only 29 years old.

After keeping his diagnosis private for many years, Fox has since become an activist and founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research in 2000.
