Synopsis

Novelist & screenwriter Glenn Patterson (Good Vibrations) will introduce one of his favourite book-to-film adaptations, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, in this special edition of the Cinema Book Club taking place as part of the 2024 Cúirt International Festival of Literature.

Based on the novel by Muriel Spark, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie premiered at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival and won Maggie Smith the Oscar® for Best Actress for her performance as the eccentric Scottish schoolteacher whose extravagantly romantic ideas about life, and love, overly impress her young pupils and bring her into conflict with her school's conservative headmistress. The novel has alternately been chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to present, and by the BBC as one of the 100 most influential novels.

Cinema Book Club and Cúirt have joined forces for a unique monthly film/book club in Galway, curated and hosted by Cúirt International Festival of Literature in Pálás.

Each month, Cúirt selects a book-to-film adaptation to watch in our cinema and then, in true Cinema Book Club style, they host a discussion afterwards in the Pálás bar. Read the book, then join Cúirt for the film and a discussion.

Great chats, great people and great fun on the third Thursday of every month!

Just show up on the night and join in. Everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read the book.
