Synopsis

On New Years Eve 1772, Versailles waited with bated breath. It was custom for the ladies who had been presented to the royal family to pay court on New Years Day, and so far the Dauphine of France Marie Antoinette had refused to meet or speak with Madame du Barry, the mistress of Louis XV. This is just one of the ways in which Marie-Antoinette consistently ruffles feathers in the French court by defying its ritualistic formality.

To celebrate the release of director Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla, we’re revisiting a favourite (and controversial!) pick from her filmography, and ringing in the new year with the lavish, stylish, and boppin’ Marie Antoinette. The retelling of France's iconic but ill-fated queen, from her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 14 to her reign as queen at 19, to the end of her reign and the fall of Versailles.

Starring Kirsten Dunst as the titular Queen, in a cast that includes Jamie Dornan, Tom Hardy and Jason Schwartzman, and with a soundtrack that includes New Order, Gang of Four, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bow Wow Wow, Adam and the Ants, and the Strokes.
