LIGHT HOUSE AND PÁLÁS LAUNCH A SUMMER SCI-FI SPECTACULAR
Get ready to embark on a cinematic odyssey across the cosmos as Light House and Pálás launch STARGAZERS: A Summer Sci-Fi Spectacular, where imagination knows no bounds.
This August, immerse yourself in a collection of time and space-bending films that will transport you to the far reaches of the universe. Featuring titles such as Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jonathan Glazer's enigmatic Under the Skin, Tarkovsky’s atmospheric masterpiece Solaris and John Carpenter’s cult classic They Live, all thought-provoking explorations of humanity and otherworldly, surreal encounters.
This celestial cinematic occurrence invites audiences to journey through space and time, encounter strange beings, and contemplate the depths of human existence all from the comfort of the cinema.
If you’re partial to Martians, martinis and mayhem, on August 19th prepare for an alien invasion with an evening of futuristic cocktails, way-out-there costumes and tunes ahead of Mars Attacks! screening on glorious 35mm. Visitors can expect an evening of out-of-this world extraterrestrial revelry in Light House.
On planning the season, Light House Programmer David Kelly commented:
“This season asks the question “are we alone in the Universe?” and answers it with a resounding No! Cinema brings us face to face with the hilariously hostile kind of alien (Mars Attacks!), with UFOs we'd want to form a band with (Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and with extra-terrestrials who control our media and our minds (until you put the glasses on) in They Live. So join us for Martian mayhem, close encounters and cerebral masterpieces this August as we bring you some of the greatest sci fi films to ever grace the big screen.”
Pálás Programmer William Fitzgerald commented:
“In the summer when a whistle-blower testified before congress that the U.S. government may be in possession of “nonhuman” biological matter, we set out to answer the age-old
question: Are we alone in the universe? The truth may be stranger than science fiction. Join us at Pálás this August to ask yourself what you believe.”
The films that will feature in this season throughout August are:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Forbidden Planet
Mars Attacks! 35mm
They Live
Solaris
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Under The Skin
This season also gives audiences the chance to discuss how close our current reality is to many of these films and where the theoretical roads lead. So, indulge your senses, expand your mind, and escape to new dimensions as we celebrate the wonders of science fiction. Following on from Stargazers, plans are already underway for an AI themed season, due to run in September.
Designer Conor Merriman has brought this season to life through specially commissioned artwork.
